Energy in Crisis - Navigating Maritime Disputes Through Arbitration

As part of Singapore Convention Week 2026, and in partnership with WongPartnership LLP, SCMA organised a seminar exploring how ongoing global energy instability is reshaping trade patterns and increasing the complexity of maritime disputes.
 
The programme opened with an insightful presentation by Daniel Oehling, a Managing Director and Partner at Boston Consulting Group (BCG), on navigating complex macroeconomic cycles, trade and FDI outlooks arising from geopolitical hotspots, including in the Strait of Hormuz.

Daniel's presentation was followed by a lively panel discussion moderated by Ian Teo, Managing Director of Helmsman LLC - Advocates & Solicitors. Our distinguished panellists, Kaili Ang (Senior Lawyer, Gard AS), Rupert Banks (Head of Specialty Claims, NorthStandard), Dirk Janssen (Independent Arbitrator) and Koh Swee Yen, S.C. (Partner, WongPartnership LLP), shared valuable perspectives on issues arising from the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz, including risk allocation through contracts and insurance, sanctions, and practical strategies for resolving these increasingly complex issues through negotiations and arbitration.
 
The conversation highlighted the need to achieve practical solutions in helping businesses navigate uncertainty in a rapidly evolving global landscape. We look forward to continuing these important discussions with the maritime and dispute resolution communities.
