KAPIL DEV BAHL is an ex “Dufferin” cadet of the 1969-1971 batch and a Master Mariner. He sailed on board general cargo ships, bulk carriers & OBO/tankers including 5 years in command.
Between 1986 and 1993 he undertook supervision of vessel demolition at Alang Ship Breaking Yard, including port-worthiness and beaching, Pilotage operations at ports of Navlakhi, Sikka, Okha, Porbunder and Bhavnagar, on contract to G.M.B; including at SPM Vadinar on contract to K.P.T; as well as Port Operations, Stevedoring, C&F, Project Cargo & Pipeline Transportation and Agency. From 1989 onwards he worked as a Nautical, Cargo & Warranty Surveyor for the P&I, H&M & Shipping Industries, specializing in Loss Assessment, Salvage / Wreck Removal claims, macro level surveys of port infrastructure projects and Expert Evidence in Arbitration, as well as OCIMF SIRE accredited Oil-Major Vetting Inspections and Maritime Arbitrations
He is a Maritime Arbitrator, with a post-graduate degree in law (LLB), has passed “The Chartered Inst. of Transport”, London, “The Inst. of Chartered Shipbrokers”, London and Narottam Morarjee Institute of Shipping, Mumbai; Associate Examinations.
He is certified

- By Lloyds’ Register in “ISM Code Auditing” as well as “ISO 9000 Q. M. S. Assessment”.

He is a Fellow of the “Company of Master Mariners of India” and served as a Court Warden. He is a member of the Governing Council of “Narottam Morarjee Institute of Shipping” and Director as well as President of the Nautical Institute India West
His sports interests include
- Sailing (Omega Class Nationals, Monsoon Regatta, Gold Medallist, 2015),
- Horse Riding (Indian Dressage League, Silver Medallist, 2014) and
- Tennis (Singles, Veterans, JGR Open, Gold Medallist, 2013).
He has passed the Bombay University, UGC Sponsored, Diploma in “Conservation of Material Heritage, Museum Studies, as well as a certificate course in “History of Art & Archaeology”
